Gateways to the World:
International Series of Taiwan Literature Online Workshops 2022
Besides the mesological disposition, the transcultural contact with the East-Asian and world literary zeitgeist also gives birth to Taiwan literature. A quick glance at the literary history reveals how Taiwanese writers are actively engaging with the world literary zeitgeist to gradually bring up their simultaneity with the world. That Taiwan literature are often concerned with world events also manifests its local resonance with the global context and clearly demonstrates its special condition of being-in-the-world. Therefore, under this premise, it is thinkable that Taiwan literature has an unlimited potential for constantly staying in conversation with the world. Furthermore, Taiwanese writers have never been more enterprising for entering the world literary flied for a long time. The Taiwan Literary and Art Alliance which assembled writers in 1934, for example, has stated in the first issue of its magazine Taiwan Literature, “Make all the routes of Taiwan to the heart of the world! Let the flower of our art blossom in the heart of the world!” Such a declaration hints that the ambition of these writers is not only to show their self-recognition of Taiwanese aesthetics but to connect Taiwan with the world.
In the face of the worldly vision of Taiwan literature, not only domestic scholars are devoted to developing their own academic paradigms, but recent translation and artist-in-residence projects have increasingly appealed to foreign researchers and readers. The Association for Taiwan Literature and the Center of Chinese Studies at the National Central Library hereby co-organize “Gateways to the World: International Series of Taiwan Literature Online Workshops 2022.” We invite eight influential writers to give online lectures, introduce their representative works, and share unique Taiwanese experience at eight prestigious universities to promote the oversea visibility of Taiwan literature, so that Taiwan literature can grow both local and international.
